The study concluded that the rats that excercised had greater levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), this being the largest factor in brain chemistry believing to be most closely related to the onset of Alzheimers. 2. Exercise is Todays Modern Medicine- Edward A. Taub, M.D., Family Physician and medical director of the Wellness Medicine Institute in Mount Carmel, Illinois states that, " Exercise helps provide the energy necessary for personal wellness," and, " moderate levels of exertion bolster the immune system. In fact, new studies show that a small increase in physical activity--climbing five flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator, for example--can help lower your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, breast cancer and colon cancer." Keeping a fit and healthy body is essential to everyones health and physical fitness. 3. Overweight people can extend their overall lifespan- Steven N. Blair is the head director of epidemiology and clinical practices at the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas, Texas. In a 2007 Study, Blair states that, " Overweight people who exercise are less likely to die prematurely then their inactive colleagues." He concluded his reseach by stating that" if you're overweight then it pays to exercise, even if you don't lose the weight." More now than ever we see how important exercise is.The Center for Disease Control (CDC) released their yearly survey which states that currently about 119 million, or 64.5 %, of US adults are either overweight or obese. The percentage is expected to have grown to 73.4% in 2009. This is why such an emphasis is being placed upon physical activity. 4. Exercise is Heart Smart- Nowadays most people know that exercise greatly reduces the risk of heart disease. However, most people don't know that the American Heart Association (AHA) upgraded inactivity from a " contributing factor" to "a leading cause" for heart disease and strokes.Dr. Edward Cooper, AHA president and former professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine has been researching Heart disease for years now. In 2006, in an article for the American Heart and Medical Association, he stated that "20-30% of the U.S. population-Over 50-70 million people- are so inactive that now they carry a 3-4 times greater risk for developing heart disease than more active peers." According to the AHA in 2007 they released that exercise can help control cholesterol, obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. According to the latest joint American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine guidelines on physical activity, all healthy adults ages 18-65 should be getting at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity five days of the week. It doesn't matter if you're biking, walking, jogging, swimming or whatever your favorite exercise is, it's important to keep a daily routine as all physical activity adds to a healthier heart. 5. Exercise may reduce the risk of Breast Cancer- The National Institute of Cancer Reasearch Journal reported that women who exercised regularly throughout their childbearing years may have significantly reduced their risk for premenopausal breast cancer. Researchers studied 545 women that were 40 and under with breast cancer and 545 healthy women. Those that exercised 3.8 hours per week or more reduced their premenopausal breast cancer risk by an astonishing 58% directly compared to those that were sedentary. Nationial Cancer researchers also noticed that moderate activity ( one to three hours per week) reduced their risk of breast cancer by nearly 30%. Lead researcher Leslie Bernstein, Ph.D stated that during a womans childbearing years physical activity can modify the amount of ovarian hormones she produces, these hormones are tied to breast cancer, and excercise may reduce these hormones."
